Aboard the Stardust - August 15, 2002

I spent the morning as a volunteer with 28 young anglers from the Carpinteria and Santa Barbara Downtown branches of the Boys and Girls Club. We were aboard the Stardust on their annual party boat trip. In addition there were several staff members,  4-5 parents/volunteers plus the Captain and his crew. Ray Angel, the new owner of the Stearns Wharf Baitshop was also on board to lend a hand.

We were, much to my delight, headed to fish the outer end of Goleta Pier's kelp reef. We fished from 8 to 11am during the low tide parallel to the reef using live anchovies and squid strips. The tackle had been prepared in advance and set out for use. The Captain and crew introduced themselves and gave us all a general orientation to party boat fishing and safety.

Then everyone lined up at the railings and started tossing out lines. For the next three hours I enjoyed one of the most pleasent party boat experiences I have ever had. These kids were just great! Everyone cooperated to the extent that I think we had just one or two crossed lines all morning. Polite, respectful no-hassle fishing. Except for the gentle rocking of the boat I could have been back on the pier which was only 1/8 mile away.

All total we landed around 150 fish - mostly assorted shallow water rockfish (Browns, Reds, Grass) and several small lings, sand bass and sheephead. Trophies were awarded; fish filleted and distributed; pictures taken and then we were treated to cheeseburgers and snacks on the trip home. All expenses were donated by the Santa Barbara Sea Landing - home port of the Stardust.

A great introduction to fishing for the kids and a great introduction to the next generation of anglers for the rest of us!
